About Us

Founded in 1905, the mission of the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland Chapter is to help families in Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. We help the community in hundreds of ways. We provide emergency assistance and also offer programs such as first aid and CPR training and community outreach designed to keep Cleveland safe.

Our Disaster Action Team (DAT) provides free assistance, 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year to families whose homes have been destroyed by fire or who have undergone other disasters.

Since 1992, the Red Cross, in cooperation with our partners at local fire departments including the City of Cleveland, has installed over 100,000 smoke alarms in low-income homes in six cities. During this same period of time, the number of deaths due to fire have decreased in the City of Cleveland.

We have trained hundreds of thousands of Clevelanders in life-saving behaviors like first aid, CPR, swimming, life guarding and disaster planning for older adults.

We are also the largest trainer of Nurse Assistants in this area, training over 5,000 students. We are in the community every day providing services, training and assistance.

Such success would not be possible without the support of more than 1,800 local volunteers and thousands of financial donors. We are not a government-funded agency; we rely on the generosity of the American people to provide services. It is only with donor support that we can continue to provide this assistance.
