Today's children face challenges that threaten the fabric of our society. The American Red Cross is doing its part to help children and young adults access the information they need to make sensible choices about their lives and their futures. A special program called First Aid for Children Today, or F.A.C.T., teaches second and third grade children the importance of healthy living. Lessons covered include how to respond in an emergency, healthy living habits and how to say no to drugs. Basic Aid Training is a more advanced program for fourth and fifth graders that covers the basics of first aid. Both programs are taught in schools and in the community.

Of every 100 pre-school aged children who die in fires in the U.S., 38 die in fires set by other children. Also, the vast majority of children who accidentally set fires are pre-school aged. Learn Not To Burn is a pre-school fire safety education program offered by the American Red Cross at day care centers and pre-schools. Songs, learning and play activities reinforce key fire safety behaviors for children ages three to five.

Teaching kids how to be safe in and around the water is the goal of the American Red Cross Water Safety program. Learn-To-Swim programs are offered at community pools and recreation centers throughout Greater Cleveland. Young adults can take advantage of lifeguard training, providing them with the skills they need to become certified lifeguards. The Red Cross Aquatic Examiner program provides greater pool safety by offering complete risk management services for area pools and recreation centers.

The Red Cross Babysitting course provides young people valuable information about first aid, how to respond in an emergency and basic child care information. Participants are armed with skills and knowledge that bring peace of mind to the parents of the children in their care. First Response is a unique program designed to teach inner-city youth, many of whom are considered at-risk, the value of human life. First Response trains youth in CPR and first aid so that they will know how to respond when violence or other emergency situations threaten someone's life. Participants not only gain valuable skills, but they also gain self-esteem and self-respect.
