Protecting the health and welfare of Greater Cleveland's families is critical to the Red Cross mission. Statistics show that the person who will most likely need your help by providing CPR or first aid will be a family member. Becoming certified in Red Cross CPR and first aid provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing how to respond in an emergency.

Helping families prepare for disasters can mean the difference between life and death. Red Cross educational programs and materials teach families how to prepare for fires, tornadoes, heat emergencies and severe weather. The American Red Cross is the emergency communication link between members of the United States armed forces and their families. When events such as births, deaths and other emergency situations occur, military families turn to the Red Cross. The Red Cross transmits 4,000 messages each day to members of the armed forces and their families. Red Cross also provides counseling and casework services for families in times of financial hardship, breakdowns in child care and other emergencies.

Families affected by homelessness face a difficult and uncertain future. Through the Red Cross Life Skills program, families can take advantage of free seminars on housing, employment and resource management. These seminars, taught by Red Cross volunteers, are offered at shelters throughout the community. Their aim is to help bring an end to the cycle of homelessness by offering participants a chance to improve their knowledge base and make sound choices about their lives.

Throughout the world, families are torn apart by crises such as war, famine and natural disasters. The American Red Cross, as part of the international Red Cross movement, helps families gain information about one another through its International Tracing program. The American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing and Information Center helps families find missing information about loved ones affected by the Holocaust and World War II. Tracing requests can bring about knowledge of family members living in other parts of the world or much needed peace of mind about the fate of loved ones. The American Red Cross also supports international humanitarian relief activities throughout the world.
