DISASTER PLANNING FOR THE ELDERLY
The American Red Cross has addressed the special
needs of our community's senior citizens. Disaster
Planning for Older Adults trains residents of senior citizen
housing complexes how to respond to disaster situations.
Utilizing specially trained building and floor captains, the
program empowers seniors to help themselves
immediately following a disaster. Building residents
participate in special drills and receive their own personal
evacuation bags, where they can store essential
medications and vital information.
In many communities, the church or other religious
organization is the focal point for senior citizens. The Red
Cross Church Nursing program trains members of
congregations to respond to the health needs of seniors.
Blood pressure screening and other health topics are
covered in this program. Greater Cleveland's senior
citizens are also benefitting from the home health aides
and nurse assistants who have graduated from the Red
Cross Foundations for Caregiving program. Keeping a
pool of highly skilled and highly trained health care
professionals working in our community elevates the level
of care provided to senior citizens.
