Nurse Assistant Training


This course is an entry-level course for individuals interested in working in the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Care setting. It is designed to meet all of the training requirements defined in O.B.R.A., 1987, revised in 1993 and as defined by the Ohio Department of Health. In addition, the course meets the federal Medicare requirements set forth by the health care financing administration. This course is 120 hours, which includes 24 hours of supervised clinical experience. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to take the Ohio State Test. The following subject areas are included:

  • Communication Skills, including observation, reporting, and documentation of patient status and care of services furnished
  • Taking, reading, and recording vital signs.
  • Infection control.
  • Review of body systems and reporting and recording changes in body functioning.
  • Recognizing emergencies.
  • Physical, emotional, and developmental characteristics of client populations with special needs.
  • Normal range of motion exercises.
  • Positioning, transfer techniques and ambulation.
  • Maintaining nutrition and fluid intake.
  • Assisting with elimination.
  • Personal care skills: bed bath, peri-care, oral hygiene, and skin care.
  • Making an occupied and unoccupied bed.
  • Caring for clients with special needs.
  • Care of the person with HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis.
  • Protecting the rights of people.

Graduates of the Nurse Assistant Training program are able to obtain employment in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care agencies.

To find out more information about the course, class dates/times, and financial aid, please attend an orientation. Dates are listed below and all orientations will be held at the American Red Cross – Greater Cleveland Chapter, 3747 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115.

All orientations begin promptly at 10:00 am. Please bring paper and pencil with you.

How much is the program?
Individual costs for NAT training is $800. An additional $800 will be provided in a scholarship by filling out the appropriate paperwork at the time of registration. The cost for third party payers such as employers, City/County WIA, United Labor Agency etc. is $1,600. Other financial assistance may be available. Call 216.431.3010 and ask for the NAT department.

Where can I obtain financial aid for the program?
The NorthEast Ohio Nurse Assistant Training Program (NEO-NAT), which may be offered at no cost to you. Click here to see if you qualify.

What if I don’t qualify for the NEO-NAT program?
There are other financial aid options for individuals that are eligible. Click here to see alternative financial aid options.

How long does it take to get financial aid?
Obtaining financial aid IS A PROCESS. You must complete the entire process in order to determine your eligibility for financial aid. Generally, financial aid may take at least 4—12 weeks

When can I enroll in the nursing assistant training class?
Upon completion of your financial aid process, you will either receive a cost projection to be completed by the American Red Cross or your coach may fax over your referral. At that time, you will be required to turn in your requirements for class in order to enroll.

What is your refund policy?
A $150 cancellation fee will be charged for all cancellations. No refunds will be issued for no-shows, requests received less than 14 days prior to the start of the course, or once class has begun. NO EXCEPTIONS!

What days and times are the classes?
Day classes are from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday for four (4) weeks. Evening classes are from 5:30 pm – 9:45 pm, Tuesday and Thursday for fifteen (15) weeks.

What time are the clinicals?
Clinicals for the day class are held during the last week of class from 7:30 am – 2:00 pm. Evening class clinicals are held during the last six (6) weeks of class from 6:00 pm – 10:15 pm.

Is the state test fee included in the course fee and where will I take the state test?
The state test fee is included and students schedule for the state test during the last day of class. The state test will be held at the American Red Cross – Greater Cleveland Chapter.

What do I receive once I complete the course?
You will receive your certificate of completion for nurse assistant training and you will be eligible to register for the Ohio State Test.

Will I be a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)?
No, the State of Ohio doesn’t recognize the term Certified Nursing Assistant. You will be considered a nursing assistant until you pass the state test, then you will be a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA).

Are the class times flexible?
No, you must be on time for each and every class.

What happens if I miss a day?
We have incorporated ONE makeup day for students that miss time, however, if you miss more than one day you will be dropped from the course, regardless of the reason for missing more that one day.

If I was in a previous class and was dropped, can I restart another class?
Yes, upon departmental approval.

Is a high school diploma or GED needed in order to sign up for the class?
No. However, many employers require a high school diploma or GED.

If I am a medical assistant or was previously a STNA can I just take the state test?
No, the State of Ohio required medical assistants and those individuals that were taken off the registry to retake a Nurse Assistant Training program.

Do I have to attend an orientation?
Yes, prior to program enrollment.

If I have already attended orientation, what do I need to do to enroll in the class?
If you have recently attended an orientation you will just need to turn in the required information regarding your financial aid source, or you will need your $150 deposit and ALL required documents. If you haven’t attended an orientation within the last 2 months prior to class start date, you will need to attend another one.

What else do I need for the class?
You will need a physical, 2 step Mantoux (TB Test) or negative chest x-ray, City and County criminal record check, character reference, and your deposit or financial aid referral/cost projection. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION AT THE TIME OF ENROLLMENT.

How old can the physical & 2 Step TB Test (or chest x-ray) be?
Your health records must be no more than 90 days old from the start of class, with exception of your chest x-ray, which must be no more than 2 years old.

Where can I get a physical or TB Test be done?
You can get a physical & TB test from your own healthcare provider or the free clinic. Metro Health Tuberculosis Clinic does TB testing at no cost to Cuyahoga County residents.

Where can I obtain a criminal record check?
The Justice Center downtown for a total of $6.05. If you live outside of Cuyahoga County you may contact your local police department.

Where can I get my 2-Step TB Test?
If you are a Cuyahoga County resident you can get your TB test at the Metro Health TB clinic, at no cost to you.

Where can I get a physical?
You can obtain a physical/TB test from your personal physician, at a Free Clinic or you can get it from East Side Occupational Health located at 4450 St. Clair for a fee. To schedule an appointment at ESOH, please call (216) 431-0927.
