  1. What is the Nurse Assistant Training Program?

    The Nurse Assistant Training (NAT) is the first level of training in a nursing career. This training will allow you to work in a long-term care facility (nursing home), hospital or with a home health care agency.

  2. How long is the program?

    The NAT program is 120 hours of training, which can be completed in 4 weeks. We also provide Life Skills training, which is completed in up to 45 hours, which will help you successfully, complete the Nurse Assistant Training.

  3. What kind of job can I get after the training?

    You can be employed in a long-term care facility (nursing home), hospital, or with a home health care agency. You can also continue your education to the next level in the nurse career field.

  4. How do I enroll in the program?

    Complete an application and attend one of the Orientation sessions held at the American Red Cross building. At the Orientation, you will be told what documentation you need to see if you qualify for paid tuition.

  5. Where can I get an application?

    You can pick up an application at the American Red Cross office at 3747 Euclid Avenue, Berea Children’s Home at 3416 Prospect Avenue or Click Here to download the PDF version.

  6. How do I know if I qualify for TANF?

    Once you complete an application, you will be asked to present documentation that shows any income you have earned in the last year, birth certificate and social security cards of your children, proof of residency, and information about others who live in your house. You will be told at the Intake Session if you qualify for the program.

  7. What is the cost of the program?

    If you qualify for the TANF program, there is no cost to you. The training cost as well as your uniforms will be provided. You will need to purchase appropriate white shoes or tennis shoes for the training.

  8. Where is the training held?

    The Life Skill Training will be held at 3416 Prospect Avenue. The Nurse Assistant Training will be held at the American Red Cross Office at 3747 Euclid Avenue. The clinical training will be held at various locations in the area. We will work with you to find the best location for you to attend.

  9. What do I need to bring to the Intake Session?

    You will need to bring the following original documentation:
    Your income from any jobs you have or last year’s tax return, Information about any public assistance you receive, Valid drivers license or state ID, Birth Certificates and social security cards for your children;
    Income information for others who live in your home;
    Proof of residency (rent receipt or utility bill).
    We will make copies of all this information and give you back the originals at the time of Intake Session.


  10. Are there any tests?

    Yes. In the Nurse Assistant Training class, there are 4 quizzes and 1 final exam, which will make sure that you understand the material. At the end of the program, you be eligible to take the State of Ohio Department of Health required test. Once you pass the state test, you will receive a certificate, as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) and your name will be placed on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry.

  11. Where do I get a physical?

    You can get a physical from your doctor or any other medical provider.

  12. Where do I get a city and county criminal background report?

    In Cuyahoga County, you can get both a city and county criminal background report, at the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, which is located in the Justice Center at E. 9th and Ontario Street. Please bring your valid driver’s license or state ID and your social security card. The cost for both reports is $6.05.

  13. Do I need a uniform?

    You can wear your regular appropriate clothes to the Life Skills part of the program. You will need a uniform or “scrubs” for both the classroom and clinical portions of the NAT program. We will provide your first uniform upon completion of the Life Skills program. You will be provided with a white uniform upon completion of the NAT classroom portion, before you begin clinical training. You are required to wear your first uniform to the NAT classroom portion and the white uniform to the clinical portion.

  14. How much does the uniform cost?

    There is no charge for the uniforms that you will be provided.

  15. What if I miss a class?

    Attendance is very important in this program. If you must miss any portion of any part of the training, the hours will need to be made up. The instructor will work with you to schedule you for a make up. If you miss more than 6 hours of class, you will be asked to sign up for another training session and will be required to start the program over.

  16. What if I miss a clinical session?

    All clinical training sessions are critical to the training. You need to make every effort to attend your scheduled training. If you need to miss, you must work out a makeup with your instructor.

  17. Can I bring my child(ren) to class?

    Children are not allowed at the training program. We need you to focus on the training and ask that you make every effort to find appropriate child care for your child(ren). If you need help with securing childcare, please speak with a case manager or one of the instructors.

  18. What if I have to leave class early?

    The training is based on the number of hours each person attends. Leaving early is not allowed. If you have an emergency and leave early, you will be required to make up the time. Please discuss any emergencies you might have with your instructor.

  19. What if I don’t have a car?

    We will help you arrange transportation to the class as well as clinical training with public transportation. The training class is located on a main bus route in downtown Cleveland.

  20. Can I still take the training if I don’t qualify for TANF?

    Yes. If you do not qualify for the TANF program, please speak with the instructor at the Orientation or Intake Session or call the American Red Cross Customer Service who will work with you to help you find a way to attend the Nurse Assistant Training.

  21. What if I am turned down for the TANF funding?

    You have a right to a state hearing from the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services. Please ask the NAT Program office for the information needed to request a hearing. You may also request a hearing through your county caseworker.
