American Red Cross Ashland County
Our History
Born of war, the Ashland County Red Cross was initiated by businessman J.L. Clark who enlisted public interest by explaining, “It is an organization to help people.” Several accounts credit the local chapter beginning its work as early as 1904. However, formal application for recognition as a chartered chapter to the American National Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D.C., was not made until 1917, when the United States entered World War I.
With or without National Headquarters approval, the petitioners were determined that Ashland County was going to have a Red Cross Chapter. So much so, in fact, they began their work 19 days before making their application.
In May 1946, the current chapter office on Center Street was purchased for $8,500. Another $5,000 was spent on remodeling and repairs before the staff and volunteers could move in. In 1984 a $72,000 renovation and expansion program has taken place and another room has been added to the rear. Money for the expansion came from the capital improvement fund. The upstairs is now used for storage.
In peace and in war, the Red Cross is dedicated to preventing distress and guarding human life. Our work is unending, going on day and night, in every corner of every state, in every territory that lies under the American flag. The Red Cross story is always warmly human: It is the story of people helping people. About Us.
